  • The first exhibition, "Trans-Art 91," is held on January 16. In October, the first issue of "gggBooks World Graphic Design Series" is published. The first issue features Polish master Henryk Tomaszewski.

    The Yugoslav federation collapses, and momentum builds for the creation of the European Union. China and South Korea establish diplomatic relations. The Barcelona Olympic and Paralympic Games are held. The five-day school week starts in public schools in Japan. The government enacts the International Peace Cooperation Law.

  • Graphic Design's Events

    Computer is now a major tool for graphic expression and several applications has became available, including the commercialization of "Magukurabu (Mag Club)," a color page design system for printed publications, and the release of "Painter(TM) 1.2 Japanese version," software for drawing in full color on the Macintosh.

    Anime TV shows “Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon," "Crayon Shin-chan," and "YuYu Hakusho" go on air. A US television drama titled "Twin Peaks" becomes a big hit. Shinji Nojima, who wrote the script for the drama “Yujo (Friendship)," draws attention. The video game "Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride” (for Super Nintendo Entertainment System) is released.

  • Culture

    The camping boom arrives and the automobile-camping market takes off. Mamoru Mohri becomes the first Japanese space shuttle crew member to go into space. The Japanese pop group “Checkers" disbands at the end of the year. Sumo wrestler Takanohana and actress Rie Miyazawa become engaged (but the engagement is called off in 1994). Singer/songwriter Yutaka Ozaki passes away.
