日本の先端的なタイポグラフィが一堂に集まる第4回東京タイポディレクターズクラブ展。本年度の年鑑に収録された受賞、ノミネートの秀作84点を展示。様々な新しいメディアの出現がこれまでの概念にとどまらない、豊かなタイポディレクションの世界を構築する。

The latest in Japanese typography covered the hall at the 4th Tokyo TDC Exhibition. Award winners from this year's yearbook and 84 nominated works were exhibited. The use of many new media creates a rich world of typo direction that could not have been conceived of until now.

「真 and/or 善」展が開かれた2000年代の大阪は、カウンターとしての大阪というものがまだあった気がします。当時は僕も尖っていたので、プロデュースしていたCREAMROOMというギャラリーの展示をわざわざ松井桂三さんの企画展のオープニングに合わせたりしていました。そのような態度を面白く思ったのか、次の展開を模索していたdddギャラリーから展覧会の話があり、高橋善丸氏とハンブルク美術工芸博物館（ドイツ）で行った展覧会を再構成したのが本展です。松井さんの時代にあまり大阪のデザイナーがピックアップされなかったので、やんちゃな意思表示として大阪のデザイナーを紹介する「Graphic West」シリーズを高橋氏と共に提案しました。批判というよりも、尊敬のあまり「かまってほしい」という弟的な気持ちですね。 高橋氏とふたりでデザインしたポスターは、はじめは「真」の文字も太く、「善」の字とバランスをとったものでしたが、大きさが一緒なら線を細くして大きさで高橋氏に勝とうと考えました（笑）。グラフィックデザインとは、ルールの中でのゲームだと考えているので、そのゲームを楽しもうと思った訳です。大阪人の気質か、「すんなり」「真っ直ぐ」にはいかず、すべてあまのじゃくにアプローチしてしまいましたね。主流に対して少し曲がったオルタナティブ指向とでもいうのか。

When the Truth And/Or Virtue exhibition was held in the 2000s, I think people in Osaka still believed Osaka offered a counterculture to Tokyo. I was a little aggressive back then. So, I intentionally held exhibitions at the Creamroom gallery which I helped run, at the same time as the opening of the exhibitions at ddd gallery which Keizo Matsui curated. Maybe ddd gallery found it interesting, so they invited me for their exhibition, and that’s how Truth And/Or Virtue ended up being a reorganized version of the exhibition Yoshimaru Takahashi and myself had at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg (Germany). Designers from Osaka had never really been chosen in Mr. Matsui’s era, so Mr. Takahashi and myself took the mischievous step of suggesting the Graphic West series, which would introduce designers from Osaka. It wasn’t criticism at all; we just felt like younger brothers craving a little attention and respect. I designed the poster with Mr. Takahashi; at first we created a balance between the two characters 真 (truth) and 善 (virtue), but I decided that if the size was going to be the same then I would make the lines of 真 thinner and try to beat Takahashi on space used (laughs). I see graphic design as a game played within certain rules; you have to enjoy yourself. Maybe it’s my Osakan disposition, but I never used to take the straight path and avoid trouble; my approach was total perversion. It was probably a slightly warped alternative direction in response to the mainstream.

北海道札幌市生まれ。文華印刷、大谷デザイン研究所を経て、1973年サン・アド入社。現在同社顧問。サントリーウーロン茶、ユナイテッドアローズ、とらや、TORAYA AN STANDなどの広告制作およびアートディレクションのほか、CI・サイン計画、映画・演劇のグラフィック、タイトルワーク、ブックデザインなど、活動は多岐にわたる。東京ADCグランプリ、原弘賞、毎日デザイン賞、亀倉雄策賞、などを受賞。著書に『図録 葛西薫 1968』（ADP刊）がある。

Born in Sapporo, Hokkaido Prefecture, Kasai Kaoru joined SUN-AD Company Limited in 1973 after stints working at Bunka Printing Co., Ltd. and Ohtani Design. He currently serves as advisor at SUN-AD Company Limited. His creative activities span a wide range, including advertising and art direction for Suntory Oolong Tea, United Arrows, Toraya Confectionery, and TORAYA CAFÉ, as well as corporate identity and signage, graphics and title design for films and theaters, and book design. Major awards received include the Tokyo ADC Grand Prix, Hiromu Hara Memorial Prize, Mainichi Design Award, and the Yusaku Kamekura Design Award. His publications include KASAI Kaoru 1968 (Art Design Publishing).
