ポルトガル第2の都市ポルトを拠点に活躍し、ジョアン・マシャドは、ポスターとグラフィック・イラストレーションに異彩を放っているアーティスト、ジョアン・マシャドのポスターの小型作品を中心に、1970年代の作品から最新作まで約100点を展示。“平面のポスターも、色や形、とくにシンボリズムの使用によって三次元的な側面を得ることができる”という哲学には、立体表現者としての経験も色濃く投影されているようだ。色、形、シンボリズムの3要素を感情や感覚を伝える能力に昇華させることによって、彼のポスターは直接的コミュニケーションのひとつのハードルを超えたといえるだろう。マシャドのポスターは、まさにマシャドの文化的バックグラウンドを反映した鏡である。新しい試みであるギャラリーツアーが、オープニングパーティに新鮮な彩りを添えた。

João Machado, based in the second largest Portuguese city, Porto, stands out as an artist in posters and graphic illustrations. About 100 works, primarily small posters, from the 1980's to his latest works, were shown. His experience as a three-dimensional artist deeply color his philosophy of even flat posters taking on three dimensional aspects with colors, shapes especially symbolism. By sublimating the three aspects, color, shape and symbolism, in the ability to convey feelings and sensations, his posters overcome one of the hurdles in direct communication. Machado's posters are a mirror reflecting his cultural background. The gallery tour, a new venture, added fresh overtones to the opening party.

いつもの会場レクチャー方式とは趣向を変え、展示ギャラリー内を回遊しながら作品解説を行う「ギャラリーツアー」を実施。くつろいだ雰囲気の中で、質問も活発に飛び交った。

With João Machado, instead of the usual lecture in a hall, there was a gallery tour. Works were explained as the exhibition gallery was toured. Questions were around in the relaxed atmosphere.

ポルトガル中部のコインプラ生まれ。ポートワインで有名なポルト在住。世界各国の主要なポスター及びグラフィックビエンナーレ、トリエンナーレに出品。『グラフィス』、『アイデア』をはじめとする世界各国の出版物にも作品が取り上げられている。グルベンキアン・ナショナルプライズ児童書イラストレーション第1位。イラストレーション・グラフィポート第1位。ポルトガル・ナショナル・デザイン賞第1位。第1回ミュンヘン国際リトファス・ビエンナーレ特別賞。ライプチヒ・ブック・ビエンナーレ銅賞。

Born in Coimbra in central Portugal, he is now in Porto, known for port wine. He has exhibited in the main poster and graphic biennales and triennales in countries around the world. His works have been in publications of various countries such as "Graphis" and "Idea." He placed first in children's illustrations in the Grulbenkian National Prize, the Illustration Grafiporto and the Portugal National Design Awards. He received a special award at the First Munich International Litfass Biennale. The Leipzig Book Biennale brought him the Bronze Award.

広島県生まれ。大阪芸術大学中退。1970年ロシア、ヨーロッパを経てシルクロードを歩く。髙島屋宣伝部を経て、1984年松井桂三デザイン室、92年ハンドレットデザインインク設立。日米グラフィックデザイン展銀賞、東京ADC賞ほか受賞多数。最近はグラフィックデザインを中心に広告、パッケージ、環境、映像、建築など様々なジャンルを手がける。「チャイナグラフィックデザイン'96」（中国）、「MATSUI=GRAPHIKDESIGN AUS JAPAN」（独）など海外で展覧会開催。著書に『3Dグラフィックス』（六耀社）、『平面設計士松井桂三』（中国青年出版社）がある。AGI、NY.ADC、東京ADC、東京TDC会員。JAGDA理事。

Born in Hiroshima, he left Osaka University of Arts. In 1970, he traveled through the Silk Road from Russia and Europe. After the advertising department of Takashimaya, he established the Keizo Matsui Design Office in 1984 and Hundred Design Inc. in 1992. His many awards include the Japan-America Graphic Design Exhibition Silver Award and the Tokyo ADC Award. Recently, he is primarily involved graphic design but also many genre such as packaging, the environment, film, and architecture. He has has exhibition abroad such as "China Graphic Design '96" (China) and "Matsui-Graphkdesign aus Japan" (Germany). His books include "3D Graphics" (Rikuyosha) and "Keizo Matsui: The Graphic Designer" '(Chugoku Seinen Publishing Co.). He is a member of AGI, NY.ADC, Tokyo ADC, Tokyo TDC and is a director of JAGDA.
