アメリカの若者文化を象徴する雑誌において頭角を現し、エディトリアルデザインの新潮流と評価されるアートディレクター2名の展覧会。西海岸で活躍するカーソンと東海岸で活躍するケプキ。ともに、既成概念や習慣にとらわれず、テキストとビジュアルとの相乗効果を作り上げ、コミュニケーションとしてのエディトリアルデザインの可能性に挑戦している。会場を真ん中で二分して、それぞれの作品、あわせて270点を紹介。

This was an exhibition by 2 art directors who stand out in a magazine representing young American Culture and bring the freshest breath of air. David Carson works on the West Coast while Gary Koepke is on the East Coast. Not hampered by existing concepts or customs, they came up with the effectiveness of having the text and visuals together opening up possibilities for editorial design as communication. The hall was divided in the middle and a total of 270 works were introduced.

アメリカ、テキサス州生まれ。社会学の学士号を取得し、高校で教鞭をとるかたわら、世界のランキングに入るサーファーとして活躍。1990年『Beach Culture』誌のAD、1992年『Ray Gun』誌のADを経て、現在カリフォルニア、サンディエゴでデビッド・カーソン・デザインを主宰している。

Born in Texas, he got his bachelor’s degree in sociology, and was a world ranking surfer while teaching in a high school. after being an art director for the magazine, "Beach Culture" in 1990 and "Ray Gun" in 1992, he is currently heading David Carson Design in San Diego, California.

Born in State of Wisconsin, he graduated from Cranbrook Academy. He was art director for a musician's magazine from 1984 to 1988 and established Koepke International in the suburbs of Boston in 1988. He has since been art director for the magazine "Creem," "Vibe," and undertaken others such as the Benetton PR magazine, "Colors."

日本にはグラフィックデザインを中心に展示するギャラリーがいくつか存在しています。しかし、世界的に見ると、そのような施設はほとんどなく、グラフィックデザイナーの個展やグラフィックデザインをテーマにした企画展が常時行われているこの環境は、かなり特殊なことだといえます。 そのなかの一つであるdddギャラリーは、同じ組織が運営する東京のgggと比べて、オルタナティブな姿勢で活動をしてきたという点でさらに希少な存在だと言えます。著名なデザイナーの個展を軸に据えたgggとは対照的に、dddギャラリーは「日本人がまだ知らない海外デザイナー」の紹介を初期の方針に持ち、その後も東京以西のデザイナーの紹介や他領域のデザイナーの展覧会を行うなど、ここでしか見られない展覧会活動を続けています。 gggからの巡回展が享受できるだけでなく、dddギャラリーでしか見られない展覧会があること。それはデザイナーやデザイン学生にとって恵まれた環境だと思います。このキーワードでは、dddでしか見ることができなかった展覧会をセレクトしています。

There are a few galleries in Japan whose exhibitions pivot around graphic design. If we look overseas however, institutions like these are even rarer; a place where solo graphic design exhibitions and other special exhibitions with graphic design themes happen regularly is quite a special thing. ddd gallery is one of those places; it’s even rarer when you consider that they’ve always maintained an alternative stance compared with ggg in Tokyo (which is also run by DNP Foundation). In stark contrast to ggg, which has a history centered around solo exhibitions of celebrated designers, they have always tried to hold exhibitions with “international designers yet unknown to Japanese,” designers West of Tokyo, and designers from other fields—even now they still continue to hold exhibitions that can’t be seen elsewhere. Where possible, they have avoided being the next leg on touring exhibitions from ggg, choosing to hold their own exhibitions viewable only at ddd Gallery instead. dddギャラリーには国外の気鋭のデザイナーを紹介してきた歴史がありますが、それを最初に提案したのは松井桂三氏。スペインで行われた「JAPAN PRINT」展でスペインを訪れた氏が、３度もスペインの地でDNPの北島義俊社長（当時）に出会ったことで、帰国後に「大阪で年に２〜３回、展覧会企画をお願いしたい」との依頼を受け、「世界の若手〜中堅デザイナーを紹介することができるなら」と提案したことからdddギャラリーのひとつの性格が形作られることになりました。 東京のgggでは有名な国外のデザイナーの展覧会は開かれていましたが、日本人がまだ知らないこれからのデザイナーを紹介する場は当時はなく、dddギャラリーは独自の存在意義をそこに見出すことになりました。松井氏が足で稼いだネットワークが海外との接点となり、そこからアジア・アフリカを含む幅広い海外デザイナーの紹介につながりました（海外では一時はgggよりもdddの方が認知度が高かったという噂も）。 松井氏が企画した展覧会のポスターは自身が手がけていますが、インターネットのない90年代、出展デザイナーとやりとりをするのに時間がかかるため、そして、企画者がデザイナーの松井氏であることが信頼につながっており、情報の少ないデザイナーなどは松井氏のイマジネーションがポスターに強く発揮されています。例えば「ホワイノット・アソシエイツ展（第12回）」のポスターは「why」を手がかりに「？」を針金で作りガーゼを巻き付けガソリンを染み込ませ、燃やして撮影していたり、「ラッセル・ウォーレン-フィッシャー展（第15回）」では「Fish(er)」をモチーフに市場で買ってきた生きたヒラメを撮影したりしてつくられています。インターネット以前のグラフィックデザインを見るうえで貴重な逸話です。 松井氏はdddギャラリーの移転に際し、「これからのグラフィックデザインがどうなるかを考える展覧会が増えることを期待している。未来のことを考え、人々の五感を動かすことがグラフィックデザイナーの仕事」とのメッセージを寄せてくれました。

ddd gallery has a history of showcasing emerging designers from overseas; the initiator of these exhibitions was Keizo Matsui. When visiting Spain for the Japan Print Exhibition held there, he met the president of DNP (at that time), Yoshitoshi Kitajima, three times. After returning to Japan, Kitajima asked Matsui to come up with two or three exhibitions a year in Osaka, and suggested showcasing the world’s young and mid-career designers, which ended up forming part of ddd Gallery’s backbone. Tokyo’s ggg had held exhibitions of famous designers, but in those days no place was showcasing designers yet unknown to the Japanese; in that way, ddd gallery had discovered its own unique reason to exist. The network that Matsui had gained from his travels led to connections with wide reaching introductions of international designers, including those from Asia and Africa (there was also a rumor that, at one stage, ddd was more well-known than ggg internationally). Though Matsui did design the posters for exhibitions he curated, correspondence with exhibiting designers back in the 90s took time without the internet; there was also a lack of information available on these designers. Being a designer, exhibition planner Matsui was hence trusted with the posters, and as a result his imagination is on full display in the designs. For example, for the poster for the 12th Why Not Associates Exhibition, he created a question mark (?) representing ‘why’ with wire, wrapped it in gauze, doused it in gasoline, set it alight, and took photos, and for the 15th Russell Warren-Fisher Exhibition he bought a live flounder from the market as a motif for Fish(er) and photographed it. They now serve as interesting graphic design anecdotes from a pre-internet era. With the most recent relocation of ddd Gallery, Matsui delivered a message that stated, “I hope to see more exhibitions that make us think about what is to become of graphic design. Graphic design should make us think about the future, and rouse the senses of every person.”
