    Born in Hiroshima. From 1923 to 1928 he was employed by Platon Publishing House. He joined Shiseido in 1929, remaining there until 1932. In 1934 he took part in the Nihon Kobo. He rejoined Shiseido from 1936 until 1943. In 1940 he participated in the formation of the Hodo Gijutsu Kenkyukai. He was appointed professor of the Design Department of Tama Art School (now Tama Art University) in 1947, a position he held until 1967. In 1948 he signed a contract with the Division of Advertising Culture for Shiseido. He helped set up the Japan Advertising Artists Club in 1951, and became its committee chairperson. In 1952 he was a founding member of Tokyo Ad. Art Directors' Club (now the Tokyo ADC). His first solo exhibition was held in 1953, the same year that "Souga-Shu by Ayao Yamana" (The Collected Works of Illustrations for Magazines and Advertisements by Ayao Yamana.) was published. In 1955 he was awarded the first Mainichi Newspaper Industrial Design Prize. He was appointed a special advisor to Shiseido in 1959. He became the first principal of Nihon Designers Gakuin in 1965, a position he held until 1972. from 1966 until 1969 he headed the Advertising Creation room of Shiseido.
