Born in Tokyo, Kudo graduated from the Tokyo University of the Arts (former Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music) in 1988. That same year he joined Shiseido, where he was involved in developing designs for both domestic and overseas markets. He was posted to Paris from 1992 to 1996. In 2005 he left Shiseido and established Communication Design Laboratory with designer Keiko Hirano. He engages in cross-genre activities that range from product design to brand image direction, but share the common perspective of “designing communication.” Kudo is also a part-time lecturer at Tokyo University of the Arts. His numerous domestic and international awards include the 2001 Mainichi Design Award, the Tokyo ADC Members Award, the Tokyo ADC Award, the American Institute of Architects New York Design Award, the ID-Award, the Japan Package Design Grand Prize, the Japan Display Design Association Grand Prize, and the New York ADC Silver Prize. Kudo’s notable projects include cosmetics product and package design for Shiseido Men, IPSA, and Za; creative direction and design for the Shiseido Qiora product line and its New York shop; brand image direction for Mitsukoshi; directing the development and design of the “Kihoshi” line of packaging paper produced by Takeo and Nisshinbo; and overall brand direction for Shiseido Professional.
