  • "Shueitai 100," a special exhibition commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of DNP's original typeface "Shueitai," is held in March in cooperation with Morisawa Inc. at two venues, ddd and the 1st floor entrance of Morisawa's headquarters. "gggBooks World Graphic Design Series" is launched as an e-book in October.

  • World Events

    The Arab Spring anti-government and democratization movements unfold in Arab countries. North Korean General Secretary Kim Jong-il passes away and is succeeded by Kim Jong-un. US forces kill al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. The Great East Japan Earthquake strikes with its epicenter offshore the North-Eastern part of Japan known as Sanriku. The tsunami triggered by the earthquake causes extensive damage to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, resulting in the meltdown of Reactor #1. The Kyushu Shinkansen bullet train line opens. Yoshihiko Noda becomes the 95th Prime Minister of Japan in September.

  • Graphic Design's Events

    After the earthquake disaster, designers start participating in more social contribution and social movements, such as "Post 3.11 - Kore Kara Dezain ni Dekiru Koto” (What Design Can Do from Now on) and "Yasashii Hankachi-ten” (Handkerchief for Tohoku Children Exhibition) organized by JAGDA. The exhibition "Sharpen your wit! Shigeo Fukuda Super-Retrospective" is held at the Mie Prefectural Art Museum, and later tours throughout Japan (through 2012). An exhibition facility specializing in design called de sign de opens in Nakanoshima, Osaka.
