本展のキーワードは「デザイン」そして「印刷物」。これまでに制作された数々の印刷物を、テーマや大きさに関係なく、惜しげなく、飾ることなく網羅。独特の香り立つ空間に「手」によりつくりだされた「紙々」が表情豊かに、伸び伸びと並んだ。デジタル世代に対する反発かのように、紙の質感や手作りの温もりを求める近年の動向以前から変わらず貫き通された立花氏の微妙で繊細な美が創出された。

There were two key themes to this exhibition: ”design" and "printed matter." The show liberally displayed a full complement of Fumio Tachibana's numerous printed matters to date: works on myriad topics and in myriad sizes. Within this total space redolent in its own unique way, hand-made paper works of all kinds were lined up with seeming room to spare, able to express themselves with Tachibana's subtle and detailed beauty -traits unchanging since even before the recent trend toward seeking the warmth evoked as a form of resistance against out digital age.

Born in Hiroshima Prefecture. He completed the Master's course in Fine Arts at Tokyo National Fine Arts and Music in 1994. In 2004 he won the Grand Prix at the 21st International Biennale of Graphic Design in Brno, Czech Republic. Currently he is editor-in-chief- and art director of "Kyutai," an art book periodical launched in 2007.

デザインをするときは、あまり頭で練らず、手で面白いかたちを探りますが、「GRAPHIC WEST8: 三重野龍　大全　2011-2019 『屁理屈』」では、タイトルが全然浮かばず、仕事をし始めてから理屈を言い始めた自分への自虐のような言葉をタイトルにしました。漢字の「屁理屈」とひらがなの「へりくつ」が屁のような文字で組み合わさっていますが、当時Contact Gonzoとラトビアに行っていて、そこで見た喫煙マークにインスパイアされてデザインしました。 鳥海さんの「もじのうみ」展は当初は鳥海さんの提案で、平野甲賀さんにタイトルのデザインをお願いする予定だったんですが、残念なことにお亡くなりになってしまったため、急遽僕がデザインすることに。文字をテーマにした展覧会なので、別の新しい文字はつくらないことをルールにして、游ゴシックのパースをさわって見え方を変えています。鳥海さんは「僕がおかしくなったと思われないかな」と心配していましたね（笑）。 dddギャラリーの広報物デザインに限らず、デザインするときには「欲しい」と思ってほしい、ということを意識しています。僕が選んだポスターは、実物は見たことはないものの、現物を見たい／持ち帰りたいと思わされるものを基準にしています。

When I design, I usually try to find interesting forms with my hands, rather than churning my brains. For the Graphic West 8: Ryu Mieno Solo Exhibition 2011-2019 “Quibble,” however, I couldn’t come up with anything for the title. I chose quibble because it’s masochistic, and reflective of the way I began using theory when I started working. I created an interlacing design using the kanji (屁理屈) and kana (へりくつ) for the title, and wound it together like a fart; I went to Latvia with Contact Gonzo back then, and the design was inspired by a smoking mark I saw over there. The title design I did for Osamu Torinoumi Making Type: Like Water, Like Air was originally supposed to be done by Koga Hirano as per Mr. Torinoumi’s request, but he unfortunately passed away, and I was asked to fill the sudden gap. The exhibition was all about characters; I had a rule to not create any separate new characters, so I adjusted the perspective of Yu Gothic to give it a new appearance. Mr. Torinoumi was worried that people might think he had gone crazy (laughs). When I design, regardless of whether it’s for PR materials for ddd gallery or not, I want to create desire in viewers. The posters I chose are standard for those that make viewers want to see things they have never seen before, and take them home.

鳥海展で意識したのは、多くの人に向けてつくるということです。書体デザインや、グラフィックデザインの専門性よりも、ありとあらゆる人の身近な生活につながっているものとして鳥海さんの設計した文字を見てほしいと考えました。自身の活動でも、専門性を活かしつつ、他の分野との関わりを持ち続けるような仕事ができればと思っています。山形の環境から考えることで、万事全てのことが自身にも他者にもつながっていると改めて感じる機会になりました。 dddギャラリーの過去の展示作家で言えば、デザインしながら製本や印刷も手掛け、そして作家としても活動するような専門性にとらわれない立花文穂さんの「地続き」な活動には影響を受けています。ポスターに関して言えば、現在に近づくにつれてタイポグラフィで構成されたものが多くなっていく印象で、最初の方は、図像や写真、絵を大きく大胆に使われたものが多く、永井一正さんや田中一光さんのポスターは、展覧会の中身の断片のようでワクワクしますね。

The thing I focused on was bringing the Torinoumi exhibition to as wide an audience as possible. Rather than just specify the exhibition into a typeface or graphic design category, I really wanted everyone to see the characters designed by Torinoumi, which are linked so closely with us all. In my own work I leverage my individual skill, but I still try to consider ways to work that maintain connections with other creative areas. Considering the situation from Yamagata, where Torinoumi was raised, offered me a chance to rediscover the connection between myself and others in all things. Talking about artists from past exhibitions at ddd gallery, I was inspired by the fluid activities of Fumio Tachibana—he does graphic design, book design, and printing, never limiting himself to any specific field of speciality. For the posters, I had the impression many of the more recent ones were typographic in their composition, whereas many in the beginning made bold use of illustrations, photography and pictures. The posters of Nagai Kazumasa and Tanaka Ikkou made exciting use of fragments from their exhibition content.
