先端的なタイポグラフィ作品が一堂に会する国際コンペティション「東京TDC賞」（東京タイプディレクターズクラブ主催）の成果を紹介するTDC展。国内外で評価・注目がますます高まる「東京TDC賞」の、2009年秋の公募に寄せられた3,180作品（国内2,301、海外27カ国＋2地域879）を数える応募作品の中から、厳正な審査の結果選ばれた「東京TDC賞2010」。この受賞10作品をはじめ、ノミネート作品、優秀作品を展覧。最新鋭の作品や、新しい可能性を含んだ実験作品など、日本そして世界からのエッジの効いた作品の数々が所狭しと並ぶ、日本発のユニークなで事案セレクションの妙を展開。

The exhibition introduced the cream of the crop from the 2010 Tokyo Type directors Club Awards, an international competition bringing together the latest typography works from around the world. The competition, a focus of increasing attention and acclaim both in Japan and abroad, attracted a total of 3,180 entries (2,301 from Japan; 879 from 27 foreign countries and 2 territories). This exhibition showed including not only the 10 prize-winning works but also other works making the preliminary round of judging and other outstanding works. Within the spatial limitations of the gallery, a host of the newest works from all iver the world, including works at the cuttings edge and experimental works suggesting new possibilities, were on show.

浅葉克己にとってここ数年来の大きな出来事は、一柳慧氏との再会である。天才ピアニスト、作曲家。ジョン・ケージを紹介し、現代音楽、ミニマルミュージックを日本にもたらした。音楽界を震撼させた「図形楽譜」は、40年近い年月を超え、タイポグラフィ作品として私たちの前に出現した。受賞作品「図形楽譜」が、平面から時間・空間をともなって蘇る、珠玉の90分。

1987年グラフィック担当のアンドレュー・アルトマン、デヴィッド・エリスと映像担当のハワード・グリーンハルフの3人が英国王立美術大学卒業と同時に設立。在学中から既に高い評価を得ていて名前が売れていたが、それが実社会でどこかで通よするかを確かめようとしたものだ。予想される中傷などにも考慮して、「ホワイ・ノット」という冗談半分の名前にアソシエイツを付け加えてネーミングした。1990年にホワイ・ノット・フィルムズを引き続きホワイ・ノット・パブリッシングを設立。現在、王立美術大学のデザインの講義も担当している。

ロイヤル・カレッジ・オブ・アート（RCA）同級生であるアンディ・アルトマン、デイヴィッド・エリス、ハワード・グリーンホルグは、1987年RCA卒業とともに、領域横断デザイングループ、ホワイ・ノット・アソシエイツを（3枚の製図版だけを持って）設立。以来25年にわたり、伝統的なグラフィックデザインの枠を飛び越える革新的作品で知られる。様々なメディアをつかった実験精神を、CI、モーショングラフィックス、TVコマーシャル、エディトリアル、出版、環境デザインなどに展開させることで、既成概念を破ってきた。主なクライアントに、英国王立芸術院、マルコム・マクラーレン、ポンピドゥー・センター、ロイヤル・メール、ナイキ、ポール・スミス、ヴァージン・レコード、アントニー・ゴームリー、BBC、チャンネル４、テート・モダンほか。
1991年、エドワード・ブース‐クリボーン、リック・ポイナーとともに『タイポグラフィ・ナウ』を編集、デザイン。同書は当時のタイポグラフィの動向を検証する書籍としてベストセラーとなり、最も重要かつ参照される本となった。
1998年、10年間の活動をまとめた作品集がブース・クリボーン社より出版される。2004年には続く5年間の活動をまとめた作品集第2弾がテムズ・アンド・ハドソンより刊行。1993年にディレクター業に専念するためグリーンホルグが去って以来、スタジオはアルトマンとエリスにより運営されているが、つくることと実験への愛が変わることはない。依然、グラフィックデザインの領域を打破すべく取り組んでおり、近年のプロジェクトであるアーティスト ゴードン・ヤングとのコラボレーションは、Why Notをパブリック・アートの世界へと導いた。

This was established in 1987 by Andrew who handled graphics, David　Ellis and Howard Greenhalf who handled film upon their graduation from the British Royal University of Art. They had already established their reputations and made a name for themselves while they were in school but they then had to see how far they could go in the real world. They chose the name "Why Not" for the Associates half as a joke anticipating the criticism they would get. Why Not Publishing was established in 1990 to replace Why Not Films. They currently also lecture on design at the Royal University of Art.

On leaving the Royal College of Art in 1987 (with just three drawing boards) fellow graduates Andy Altmann, David Ellis and Howard Greenhalgh immediately formed the multi disciplinary design group Why Not Associates. For over 25 years Why Not Associates have become known for creating innovative work that pushed the boundaries of traditional graphic design. They have achieved this by a love of experimenting in many different media and applying it through corporate identity, motion graphics, television commercials direction, editorial design, publishing and environmental design. Why Not Associates clients include the Royal Academy of Arts, Malcolm Mcclaren, Pompidou Centre, Royal Mail, Nike, Paul Smith, Virgin Records, Antony Gormley, BBC, Channel 4 and the Tate Modern.
In 1991 Why Not Associates collaborated with Edward Booth-Clibborn and Rick Poyner to edit and design Typography Now: The Next wave – which became the most significant, most referenced, best selling survey of typographic trends and thinking of its time.
A monograph was published in 1998 by Booth-Clibborn editions documenting the first ten years of their work. A second was published in 2004 by Thames and Hudson which documented another five years.
The studio (now run by Altmann and Ellis after Greenhalgh left in 1993 to pursue a directing career) remains as committed as ever to the love of making and experimentation. They still strive to push the boundaries of graphic design and more recent projects collaborating with artist Gordon Young have moved them into the world of public art.
