教授と学生とが共同で近代タイポグラフィ史の研究に取り組んできたデュッセルドルフ応用技術大学デザイン学科が、2003年に立ち上げたシュミットについての研究プロジェクト「シュミット・トゥデイ」。その3年間にわたる研究の成果を書籍、展覧会、そしてデジタル・シュミット・アーカイブとしてまとめた「デザイン・イズ・アティテュード」が、韓国、スイス、ドイツそしてgggを経てddd巡回。

Helmut Schmid has been involved in researching the recent history of typography in a collaborative project between professors and students in the design department of the Fachhochschule Düesseldorf (University of the Applied Sciences). The "Schmid Today" research project on Schmid has been underway since 2003, and its results have been made available as the book and the exhibition, "Design is Attitude," as well as in the form of a digital media archive. The exhibition toured Korea, Switzerland, Germany and the ggg before coming to Osaka.

オーストリア生まれ。西ドイツで植字工見習いを終了後、スイスのAGS（バーゼル工芸学校）で、モダンタイポグラフィの泰斗エミール・ルーダーや、ロベルト・ビュヒラー、クルト・ハウエルトのもとで学ぶ。バーゼル、西ベルリン、ストックホルム、モントリオール、バンクーバー、大阪、デュッセルドルフで働いた後、1977年より大阪在住。大塚製薬の医薬パッケージやポカリスエット、IPSAや資生堂MAQuillAGEのブランドアイデンティティをはじめ多数のデザインを手掛ける。同時に、『タイポグラフィック・リフレクション』などの自主出版活動も行う。2000 年より2010 年まで神戸芸術工科大学にて、2006 年から1年半はソウルの弘益大学校にて教鞭をとる。

Born in Austria. Completing a compositor apprenticeship in West Germany, he studied under Emil Ruder – the master of modern typography – Robert Büchler, and Kurt Hauert at AGS (The Basel School of Design) in Switzerland. After passing through Basel, West Berlin, Stockholm, Montreal, Vancouver and Düsseldorf, he finally settled down in Osaka in 1977. Schmid’s work ranges various fields including editorial design, packaging of ethical drugs and visual identity for brands such as Pocari Sweat sports drink (Otsuka Pharmaceutical), MAQuillAGE (Shiseido) and IPSA. He also produced independent publications in parallel, such as Typographic Reflections. Schmid taught at Kobe Design University from 2000 to 2010, and Hongik University in Seoul for a year and a half from 2006. 

日本にはグラフィックデザインを中心に展示するギャラリーがいくつか存在しています。しかし、世界的に見ると、そのような施設はほとんどなく、グラフィックデザイナーの個展やグラフィックデザインをテーマにした企画展が常時行われているこの環境は、かなり特殊なことだといえます。 そのなかの一つであるdddギャラリーは、同じ組織が運営する東京のgggと比べて、オルタナティブな姿勢で活動をしてきたという点でさらに希少な存在だと言えます。著名なデザイナーの個展を軸に据えたgggとは対照的に、dddギャラリーは「日本人がまだ知らない海外デザイナー」の紹介を初期の方針に持ち、その後も東京以西のデザイナーの紹介や他領域のデザイナーの展覧会を行うなど、ここでしか見られない展覧会活動を続けています。 gggからの巡回展が享受できるだけでなく、dddギャラリーでしか見られない展覧会があること。それはデザイナーやデザイン学生にとって恵まれた環境だと思います。このキーワードでは、dddでしか見ることができなかった展覧会をセレクトしています。

There are a few galleries in Japan whose exhibitions pivot around graphic design. If we look overseas however, institutions like these are even rarer; a place where solo graphic design exhibitions and other special exhibitions with graphic design themes happen regularly is quite a special thing. ddd gallery is one of those places; it’s even rarer when you consider that they’ve always maintained an alternative stance compared with ggg in Tokyo (which is also run by DNP Foundation). In stark contrast to ggg, which has a history centered around solo exhibitions of celebrated designers, they have always tried to hold exhibitions with “international designers yet unknown to Japanese,” designers West of Tokyo, and designers from other fields—even now they still continue to hold exhibitions that can’t be seen elsewhere. Where possible, they have avoided being the next leg on touring exhibitions from ggg, choosing to hold their own exhibitions viewable only at ddd Gallery instead.
