蛇、狼男、まっ黒なプラズマ、暗い沼、ねじれた古代の錬鉄…、これらがアメリカの女性グラフィックデザイナー、マーゴ・チェイスのデザインを構成するエレメントだ。彗星のように現われた彼女のデザインの魅力とは何か。それはアーティストの道を選んだにもかかわらず、かつては獣医を志したという生物学的な一面を内包した二重構造の感性にあるようだ。“この仕事に携わっている理由のひとつは、普通でないイメージを創造できるから”。視覚文化の本質、そして未知の可能性を示唆しているかのような彼女の作品が、広い会場を圧倒。映画ポスターやCDジャケット、スノーボードなど約200点を展示。彼女のデザインワークを集約したビデオ映像展示も併せて行った。

Snakes, wolf-men, pitch-black plasma, dark swamps, old, twisted wrought iron-these are the elements that make up the American woman designer Margo Chase's designs. She appeared like a comet. What makes her designs so appealing. Inspire of her having become an artist, she once planned to be a veterinarian. Her works have a double construction connoting her side as a biologist. "One of the reasons I'm involved in this work is that I can create images that are not ordinary." Her works that suggest the essence of the visual culture and unknown possibilities overwhelmed the large hall. About 200 works were exhibited including movie posters, CD jackets and snowboards. Also shown was a video summarizing her design work.

インスピレーションの素材とそれをベースに制作した作品をスライドで並べて解説するなど、創作プロセスのノウハウまでをも公開。人気の女性デザイナーのてまえ、会場には若い女性の姿も多く見られた。

Slides were used to explain works made with and based on illustrations. The knowhow behind the creative process was also revealed. There were many young women in the hall a talk in a dazzling atmosphere.

カリフォルニア州立工芸大学で生物学専攻。大学院でメディカル・イラストレーションを学ぶ。1981年にロサンゼルスでプロのデザイナーとして活動を開始し、1983年にフリーランスのロゴ・デザイナーとして独立。ワーナー・ブラザース・レコードのプロジェクトへの参加を契機にレコード業界へ進出。その後プリンス、マドンナなどのCDジャケットを次々に手がけ、パッケージデザインやファッション分野にも進出している。

She majored in biology at California Polytechnic and medical illustration in graduate school. In 1981, she began working as a professional designer in Los Angeles. In 1983, she went on her own as a freelance logo designer. A record project with Warner Brothers gave her on opportunity to enter the world of records. Since then, she has done a number of CD Jackets including ones for Prince and Madonna. She has also entered the packaging and fashion areas.

dddギャラリーには国外の気鋭のデザイナーを紹介してきた歴史がありますが、それを最初に提案したのは松井桂三氏。スペインで行われた「JAPAN PRINT」展でスペインを訪れた氏が、３度もスペインの地でDNPの北島義俊社長（当時）に出会ったことで、帰国後に「大阪で年に２〜３回、展覧会企画をお願いしたい」との依頼を受け、「世界の若手〜中堅デザイナーを紹介することができるなら」と提案したことからdddギャラリーのひとつの性格が形作られることになりました。 東京のgggでは有名な国外のデザイナーの展覧会は開かれていましたが、日本人がまだ知らないこれからのデザイナーを紹介する場は当時はなく、dddギャラリーは独自の存在意義をそこに見出すことになりました。松井氏が足で稼いだネットワークが海外との接点となり、そこからアジア・アフリカを含む幅広い海外デザイナーの紹介につながりました（海外では一時はgggよりもdddの方が認知度が高かったという噂も）。 松井氏が企画した展覧会のポスターは自身が手がけていますが、インターネットのない90年代、出展デザイナーとやりとりをするのに時間がかかるため、そして、企画者がデザイナーの松井氏であることが信頼につながっており、情報の少ないデザイナーなどは松井氏のイマジネーションがポスターに強く発揮されています。例えば「ホワイノット・アソシエイツ展（第12回）」のポスターは「why」を手がかりに「？」を針金で作りガーゼを巻き付けガソリンを染み込ませ、燃やして撮影していたり、「ラッセル・ウォーレン-フィッシャー展（第15回）」では「Fish(er)」をモチーフに市場で買ってきた生きたヒラメを撮影したりしてつくられています。インターネット以前のグラフィックデザインを見るうえで貴重な逸話です。 松井氏はdddギャラリーの移転に際し、「これからのグラフィックデザインがどうなるかを考える展覧会が増えることを期待している。未来のことを考え、人々の五感を動かすことがグラフィックデザイナーの仕事」とのメッセージを寄せてくれました。

ddd gallery has a history of showcasing emerging designers from overseas; the initiator of these exhibitions was Keizo Matsui. When visiting Spain for the Japan Print Exhibition held there, he met the president of DNP (at that time), Yoshitoshi Kitajima, three times. After returning to Japan, Kitajima asked Matsui to come up with two or three exhibitions a year in Osaka, and suggested showcasing the world’s young and mid-career designers, which ended up forming part of ddd Gallery’s backbone. Tokyo’s ggg had held exhibitions of famous designers, but in those days no place was showcasing designers yet unknown to the Japanese; in that way, ddd gallery had discovered its own unique reason to exist. The network that Matsui had gained from his travels led to connections with wide reaching introductions of international designers, including those from Asia and Africa (there was also a rumor that, at one stage, ddd was more well-known than ggg internationally). Though Matsui did design the posters for exhibitions he curated, correspondence with exhibiting designers back in the 90s took time without the internet; there was also a lack of information available on these designers. Being a designer, exhibition planner Matsui was hence trusted with the posters, and as a result his imagination is on full display in the designs. For example, for the poster for the 12th Why Not Associates Exhibition, he created a question mark (?) representing ‘why’ with wire, wrapped it in gauze, doused it in gasoline, set it alight, and took photos, and for the 15th Russell Warren-Fisher Exhibition he bought a live flounder from the market as a motif for Fish(er) and photographed it. They now serve as interesting graphic design anecdotes from a pre-internet era. With the most recent relocation of ddd Gallery, Matsui delivered a message that stated, “I hope to see more exhibitions that make us think about what is to become of graphic design. Graphic design should make us think about the future, and rouse the senses of every person.”

グラフィックデザインの展覧会は、基本的に成果展であり、それら以外に展示できるものといえばスケッチや指示書が限界です。これだと展覧会として発展性がないので、鳥海展では書体となって流通するまでのプロセスをいかに作品化し、構成できるのか、ということを考えました。私は現代美術のキュレーターですが、鳥海展ではむしろ、デザイナーのように取り組んだ展示だと思います。「わかりやすく、取りつきやすい空間」というテーマに設定し、「一般性」をすごく意識しました。 また、京都dddギャラリーは主にデザイン業界に向けた施設だと思いますが、「非西洋諸国の近代性」という点に着目して眺めています。たとえば日本語活字は、表音文字と表意文字が混ざった言語を無理やり正方形の中に収めて書体化し、なんとか西洋のアルファベットのように成立させた均一な連続体ですが、そもそもなぜ均質にする必要があるのか。鳥海さんは無意識的に「水のような米のような文字（＝すんなり入ってくる文字）」ということを仰っていますが、逆に言うと、実はわれわれは知らず知らずのうちに、鳥海さんのような書体設計士が想像する身体に標準化されている=制度化されているのではないか。グリッドシステムが奨励されたときもありますが、そもそもそんなに整然とさせる必要があるのか。見やすいデザイン、あるいは読みやすい本文組みとは、そもそも誰の身体に向けたことなのか。グラフィックデザイン領域において、そういった西洋近代への批判性はほとんど議論されることはないように思います。これらを扱う展覧会に期待しています。

Graphic design exhibitions usually showcase accomplishments; beyond that all that can be displayed are sketches and notes surrounding visuals. There’s no room to expand exhibitions this way though; for Torinoumi’s exhibition I came up with the notion that we could turn the process of creating a typeface itself into the exhibited work. I’m a contemporary art curator, but for Torinoumi’s exhibition I worked on it more like a designer, I feel. I established a theme of making it easy-to-understand with an easy-to-follow space design, while being constantly aware of a universalness. In addition, though Kyoto ddd Gallery was established primarily for the design world, they’re focused on the “modernity of the non-Western sphere,” I believe. For example, Japanese type takes the Japanese language with its mix of phonograms and ideograms, and creates typefaces by forcing them into squares in uniform succession that is somehow similar to the Latin alphabet; but what is all the homogeneity for in the first place? Torinoumi himself speaks of characters being “like water, like rice,” (i.e. we absorb them without resistance), but on the contrary, isn’t it the forms created by typeface designers like Torinoumi that we are all made to believe is standardized, or we are all institutionalized by? Grid systems do help induce them, but is all the systemisation necessary in the first place? Pleasant visuals and easy to read body typesetting are for whom exactly? In the field of graphic design, there is practically no discussion, or criticism of the West. I hope for more exhibitions dealing with this.

Born in Hiroshima, he left Osaka University of Arts. In 1970, he traveled through the Silk Road from Russia and Europe. After the advertising department of Takashimaya, he established the Keizo Matsui Design Office in 1984 and Hundred Design Inc. in 1992. His many awards include the Japan-America Graphic Design Exhibition Silver Award and the Tokyo ADC Award. Recently, he is primarily involved graphic design but also many genre such as packaging, the environment, film, and architecture. He has has exhibition abroad such as "China Graphic Design '96" (China) and "Matsui-Graphkdesign aus Japan" (Germany). His books include "3D Graphics" (Rikuyosha) and "Keizo Matsui: The Graphic Designer" '(Chugoku Seinen Publishing Co.). He is a member of AGI, NY.ADC, Tokyo ADC, Tokyo TDC and is a director of JAGDA.
