GRAPHIC WEST 5 type trip to Osaka typographics ti: 270

  • "typographics to:" - a public-relations magazine published by the Japan Typography Association - ran a series of special features called "type trop2 examining contemporary Asian typography. In preparing those articles, JTA members personally travelled Seoul, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taipei, Shenzehn , Bangkok and Beijing and spoke directly with local designers. The final destination of this "trip" was Osaka. Here, in addition to exhibiting works by designers in each city that has been visited, the gallery space recreated the processes whereby Japanese members and Asian designers collaboration on "type trip to Osaka," extending to the designers' thought processes. The chosen theme was divination using the "eight trigrams" - the Oriental philosophy of fortune telling. Eight display stands were arranged in an octagonal configuration and on each shelf, the designers from the eight cities put together content on the themes of "work" and "city situation."

    Namba SS Building

    This talk featured Singapore’s Chris Lee, one of the participating designers. By way of introducing the current situation of design in Singapore, Mr. Lee spoke about the diverse activities of Asylum, the internationally active creative farm, nd about establishing Design Society, a voluntary community of designers. The discussion was later joined by Javin Mo of Hong Kong and Santi Lawrachawee of Bangkok. They spoke about the design situation in their respective cities, focusing on new movements by the young generation. During the exhibition, run, a series of weekly events titled "InterView" was also held, variously featuring Sulki Choi and Min Choi of Seoul, Hei Yiyang of Shenzhen, Aaron Nieh of Taipei, and Xiao mage & Chengzi of Beijing. Through direct interaction with the participating designers, audiences were afforded opportunities to acquire firsthand knowledge about the latest graphic design trends in cities all around Asia.
