2010年11月に開催した、DNPグラフィックデザイン・アーカイブ収蔵の田中一光作品による巨星回顧展「田中一光ポスター1953-1979」に続く第二弾。1980年から晩年期2002年までのポスター作品約920点の中から150点を選抜。世界屈指のポスター作家として評価を揺るぎないものとしたこの後半期を物語る代表作「Nihon Buyo」や「サルヴァトーレ・フェラガモ展［華麗なる靴］」、あるいはカリグラフィックな要素を取り入れ新たな境地を開いた「舞踏花伝」など、生涯を通じて旺盛な創作活動に邁進した軌跡を明らかにした。

This exhibition was a follow-up to a retrospective of Ikko Tanaka’s early posters (1953-1979) held at ddd in November 2010. This time, 150 works were selected from his output of roughly 920 poster works created between 1980 and 2002. This, his later period includes representative works that secured his acclaim as one of the world's foremost poster artist: including "Nihon Buyo," "Salvatore Ferragamo: The Art of the Shoe," and "Butoh Kaden," a work that opened up new artistic territory with its incorporation of calligraphic elements. The exhibition shed light on Tanaka's robust pursuit of creative activity through to the end of his life.

Born in Nara Prefecture, he graduated from the Kyoto City College of Fine Arts. He joined in establishing the Nippon Design Center in 1960. He headed the Ikko Tanaka Design Studio in 1963. His awards include the Mainichi Industrial Design Award, the Recommended Artist's Award from the Ministry of Education, Japan, the ADC Gold Awards, the Tokyo ADC Awards of Excellence, and the Mainichi Art Award. He was accepted to the NY ADC Hall and has received the purple Ribbon Medal. He has been the art director of the Saison Group since 1973. He is currently the Tokyo ADC chairman, and an AGI member. 鳥海展で意識したのは、多くの人に向けてつくるということです。書体デザインや、グラフィックデザインの専門性よりも、ありとあらゆる人の身近な生活につながっているものとして鳥海さんの設計した文字を見てほしいと考えました。自身の活動でも、専門性を活かしつつ、他の分野との関わりを持ち続けるような仕事ができればと思っています。山形の環境から考えることで、万事全てのことが自身にも他者にもつながっていると改めて感じる機会になりました。 dddギャラリーの過去の展示作家で言えば、デザインしながら製本や印刷も手掛け、そして作家としても活動するような専門性にとらわれない立花文穂さんの「地続き」な活動には影響を受けています。ポスターに関して言えば、現在に近づくにつれてタイポグラフィで構成されたものが多くなっていく印象で、最初の方は、図像や写真、絵を大きく大胆に使われたものが多く、永井一正さんや田中一光さんのポスターは、展覧会の中身の断片のようでワクワクしますね。

The thing I focused on was bringing the Torinoumi exhibition to as wide an audience as possible. Rather than just specify the exhibition into a typeface or graphic design category, I really wanted everyone to see the characters designed by Torinoumi, which are linked so closely with us all. In my own work I leverage my individual skill, but I still try to consider ways to work that maintain connections with other creative areas. Considering the situation from Yamagata, where Torinoumi was raised, offered me a chance to rediscover the connection between myself and others in all things. Talking about artists from past exhibitions at ddd gallery, I was inspired by the fluid activities of Fumio Tachibana—he does graphic design, book design, and printing, never limiting himself to any specific field of speciality. For the posters, I had the impression many of the more recent ones were typographic in their composition, whereas many in the beginning made bold use of illustrations, photography and pictures. The posters of Nagai Kazumasa and Tanaka Ikkou made exciting use of fragments from their exhibition content.

Born in Osaka, he left the sculpture department of the Tokyo National University of Fine Art and Music in 1951 and helped establish the Nippon Design Center in 1960. His many awards include the Japan Advertising Artists Club Award, the Tokyo ADC Members Grand Prize and the Mainichi Art Award. He received the 1989 Purple Ribbon Medal and has had one man shows at the Toyama Museum of Modern Art, the Poster Annex of the Warsaw Museum of Modern Art and the Ikeda Museum of 20th Century Art. His works are in the collections of the New York Museum of Modern Art and the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art. He is currently a representative director of the Nippon Design Center and a chairman of JAGDA, and a member of AGI and Tokyo ADC. Books: "World of Kazumasa Nagai" and "Kazumasa Nagai Design Life."

Born in Osaka, Mr Nagai attended Tokyo National University of Fine Arts an Music until withdrawing in 1951. In 1960 he participated in the founding of Nippon Design Center, where he currently serves as Senior Executive Advisor. He has created numerous symbols through the years, including for the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics, Expo'75 in Okinawa and Asahi Breweries. He has also designed a broad range of posters for corporate advertising, musical performances, exhibitions, etc., and overseas. Mr. Nagai is a member of Tokyo ADC and AGI.

Born in Osaka, Kazumasa Nagai attended Tokyo National University of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts), where he studied Sculpture until withdrawing in 1951. In 1960, he participated in the founding of the Nippon Design Center, together with Ikko Tanaka and other up-and-coming young designers. In 1975 Mr. Nagai became that organization’s president, and he currently serves as its chief executive advisor. He also serves as special advisor to JAGDA.
During his long career he has created logomarks, CI and posters for numerous clients including: the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics, Okinawa Expo ’75, Ibaraki and Niigata prefectures, Japan Agricultural Cooperatives (JA), Asahi Breweries, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, etc. In the late 1980s Mr. Nagai launched his “LIFE” series featuring flora and fauna motifs, and in 2003 his creative endeavors expanded to copperplate printmaking.
He has won a host of awards, both global and domestic: Tokyo ADC Grand Prize, Yusaku Kamekura Design Award, Mainichi Design Award, Mainichi Art Award, Himeji Cultural Arts Grand Prize, Warsaw International Poster Biennale Gold Prize, and International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno Grand Prize. From the Japanese Government he has received the prestigious Minister of Education Award for Fine Arts, Medal with Purple Ribbon, and Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette.
Mr. Nagai’s works are included in the permanent collections of more than 20 museums worldwide, including the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design, Museum of Modern Art, New York (MoMA), and Metropolitan Museum of Art.
